Better late than never?

Okay, so I’ve had a little time of – only a couple of years… well, I guess it’s better to come back late then never. My husband and I have bought a townhouse since my last post so maybe just maybe I’ll have some domestic content worth talking about… and as for the laundry… it’s still piled up. Towels this time.

Isn’t amazing how the laundry just keeps piling up. I think I have too many clothes. I just took a big bundle of them to Value Villiage last weekend after cleaning out my closet but I still have two full laundry baskets of dirty clothes, two of clean clothes and a full closet (a big closet at that). I guess I need to purge even more…

This year I’ve got two Christmas parties to go to that require a nice little cocktail dress or something with pizazz at least. I thought about shopping till I drop to find the right outfit but then I picked up one of my sewing magazines from this summer and saw a pattern for a great little dress that can be classed up or very casual depending on the fabric. Off to Fabricland I went and found the most amazing silk duponi in dark navy blue… perfect. I’ve got it all cut out and most of the top portion done. Stay tuned, it must be ready for Friday night…

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Here we are late November it’s time to get Christmas in order… Holiday baking… sewing presents… shopping… wrapping… decorating… I love this season. I’m trying to pick out a couple of quilting patterns for presents… but I can’t give too many hints about what it is before Christmas – can’t ruin the surprise. I also have to decide what cookies I should make this year.

I tried out a new to me recipe the other day for some “Dad’s Cookies.” It caught my eye in the first place because I love the brand Dad’s Cookies (especially Goodie Rings) plus it was a recipe in one of my Grandma Rothery’s cook books – Paradise Hill Kinsmen’s Club and it had a big check mark next to it. I figured it’s a cookie that I’ve likely had a dozen times before and Grandma and Grandpa’s cookies were usually pretty damn good. Well it was definitely a hit, a nice little oatmeal coconut cookie and the recipe didn’t make a zillion (made about 3 dozen). Another great thing – I got to use my stand mixer again (I love that thing).

Mmmmm Lasagna

Okay, I haven’t been much of a domestic goddess lately… until yesterday. I made a fantastic, amazing, yummy lasagna. Damn I’m good when I feel like it. The bonus – the pan is so big that I won’t need to cook for days. Another great thing, Tim let me put in Veggie Ground Round…

So what’s kept me from posting… Danier Leather and my loathing of their inability to do alterations correctly. I went out and bought a really great leather jacket. Knee length, button up with removable liner, nice stitch detail as well. I took it home, wore it around a bit and decided the sleeves were a bit to long. When I bought it they said I could bring it back to be altered, so I did. They had it for nearly a week (shorter than they said it would be) then when I picked it up and tried it on I thought the sleeves seemed a little short but I had a bulky sweater on and I thought that was the issue… The next moring we were going to see Tim’s mom (out of town) and I put the jacket on with a T-shirt and the liner out and the sleeves were too short indeed. I looked like retard… Arg!!! I took it back when we got home and the lady said she couldn’t help me I’d need to talk to the store manager when she’s in next… So a few days later when she’s in I go and see her, first she tries telling me it’s fine (when I lift my arms the sleeves come halfway to my elbows – she says that normal) – I say No. Then she says they can let the sleeves out a cm (yeah that’ll help the 3 – 4″ problem…). I say No again. After some back and forth discussion, the testing of 7 jackets and 45 minutes (in addition to the 3 weeks I’ve had a jacket I can’t wear) - I leave with a new jacket that mostly fits and will not get altered by Danier… A pain the ass, but at least they did remedy the issue. Now I’m ready for winter (and we’ve had warm weather of course).

Today as I left work to head home I was feeling somewhat ambitious… or at least a little bit and was trying to decide what to make for supper (the eternal question in our house). I stopped in at the local grocery store and decided the pork schnitzel looked good, but what to make with it? How about some scalloped potatoes? That sounds tasty, but takes forever to prepare… then I remembered I have the slicer attachment for my kitchen aid stand mixer.

I tried using the slicer before on some apples and it didn’t work so well (the blades aren’t actually that sharp, there’s just a lot of force on the slicing cone). the potatoes worked quite a bit better (the onions not as much) and the carrots rocked. Though the quality of slice wasn’t quite what I was hoping for (much thinner) it was fast. Potatoes, onions and carrots were prep’d, sliced and in the casserole dish in 15 minutes and didn’t need to cut a thing. Too bad they take so long to cook – I always under estimate the time it takes.

Bucky loved them just the same, he managed to lick the plates clean when we weren’t looking and we busted him up on the stove trying to eat out of the casserole dish (the metal serving spoon gave him up).

Now I can look forward to tasty left overs tomorrow…

Weekend wraps up

It’s Sunday night and I’m looking to the week ahead of me, lots to do starting with an 8:30 meeting tomorrow morning followed by three more meetings by lunch… in the afternoon I’ll decorate my office for Halloween. Busy, busy, busy all week – night school Tuesday, Halloween pot luck Wednesday lunch at work (that I’m helping organize), WW meeting Wednesday night, floor hockey Thursday, and who knows, maybe a trip to the Island next weekend. No wonder why I never get house work done, I’m too busy having fun to worry about cleaning.

Got part of the kitchen under control today thanks to hubby doing his “chores”, but still lots of work to do on it. I need to clean out the cupboards and get rid of all the food we’re not going to eat so we can do a good grocery shop of healthy food and make sure it all has a home inside the cupboards. I need to clean out the fridge again too, I wonder what science projects await me…

Here I am with my first blog entry. I never really thought of having one until I started taking an e-Marketing class at BCIT and it was suggested that we each start one – so here is mine.

I’m on my way to domestic goddess status, though I think it may take me a lifetime together. I take small victories when I get them (the pot roast I made a couple weeks ago was damn good) and don’t worry too much about the misses. I have no dreams of being the next Martha Stewart, but in 30 years I’d like to be the Grandma that knows how to make the best cookies and knits sweaters you want to wear.

Task #1 right now, get the kitchen/dining room re-organized…
